Summary

Lucian Blackthorne is about as rich as they get, but he's also a monster. What he craves, what he wants, and what he has been through is enough to make any man break- and break he certainly has. He is known as the Devil of Blacksalt, and a name he doesn't deny.

Isadora Quinn isn't without her own monsters. Monsters she has tried to deny. She takes the job at as a caretaker for Lucian's mother where she hopes to suffer through the mess to make enough money t0 get her away from the memories, the rumors, and start again.

Two broken people full of secrets and looking for an escape.

My thoughts:

This is not going to be a book for everyone. I have enjoyed macabre stories since I first fell in love with Phantom of the Opera. This book has huge Phantom of the Opera vibes with a dash of beauty and the beast. I've always enjoyed the darker sides of things. Halloween is my favorite time of year, I often was known as the girl all in black and enjoy the creepier sides of things. This book delivers.

I enjoyed the writing style, but the first half of the book was slow. It took a bit to get through and most of the "action" happens in the last 25% of the book. However, for this book- it works. Keri Lake's writing style has you falling into this dark and dangerous setting. You start second guessing your own thoughts and what you think will happen. While some things I did get right- there were a few twist and turns that I did not see coming.

This is a dark romance. This does not have the "let's go to the movie theaters and fall in love" storyline, this is about seeing the good and ugly in a person. This is a story of loving oneself as you are, a story of embracing the good and bad parts of everyone.

My favorite thing was a quote that states (not exact quote here) that you know you are falling in love when you can't imagine your life without that person. This is the same thing my mother told me when I was going through my first heartbreak at about 15/16. It's by these words I have lived and so it was nice seeing it in a book that I loved deeply.

I resonated a lot with Isa, and see a lot of myself when I was 19 in her. It was refreshing to not hate a FMC.

Overall, this story is not for those who want butterflies and sunshine. This is not for those who shy away from the dark and macabre. No, this is a book for those who know that it exist. For those who aren't scared of death and find peace in cemeteries.
