Brigid knew the superstition, but when her father tried to marry her off, she had no choice but to stowaway on a ship bound for Bhodheas. When she’s discovered and discarded, her fate seems sealed…until she’s saved by the ocean and its queen.
Transformed into a syren and given new life, Brigid now has the power to seek revenge on those who wronged her.
Caelum has spent his entire life trying to help those who couldn’t help themselves. After years suffering the cruelty of his pirate father, saving others from a similar fate was ingrained in him. But when he’s unable to save a young girl from being thrown overboard for hiding away, he’s devastated.
Until one day, when he’s thrown into the water by unforeseen forces, he comes face to face with the past, and maybe, with his future.
But there’s a darkness lurking on the seas they both call home. And Caelum and Brigid have no idea just how intertwined their stories really are.
My thoughts
Thank you Katie & Brey PA for the opportunity to read this book.
I think that this book is absolutely going to be many people's favorite. It just wasn't mine. I had a struggle getting into this book. The world building that Jessica has done is absolutely beautiful and her descriptions are on point always. She does have a way of making you feel "in the world".
I loved the banter between the two characters. I loved the idea behind this story however I found it falling flat in ways as well. The banter is what kept me going and I really loved the dynamic between the two characters. She's mistrusting and he works to gain that trust and keeps her needs in mind at all times.
I enjoyed the heck out of Brigid and found her to be an extremely interesting character, but I found myself wanting more from the side characters. I wanted to know more about them as well as the other sirens and maybe we will see more of that in the next book.
I absolutely adored the anxiety rep, but the book came off as repetitive. So many sentences throughout the book are constantly reused and restated. While marketed as a NA, I think it gave off more of a YA feel- which isn't necessarily bad as YA Fantasy is usually one of my absolute favorites.
This book would be a great beside the pool or at the lake read. It is an extremely slow burn and the pirate is just a giant cinnamon roll, which isn't my usual flavor. I like a little dirt on my men. However, if you love this type of energy this could absolutely be your new favorite!
The ending is an absolute cliff hanger so beware. It is a doozy.
As always, give it a try. What may not be my cup of tea, is your exact brand of whiskey.
